报告题目:The Story of VULCAN – A Microcosm of Instrument Building and High-impact Science at the SNS
报告人:王循理教授 (Oak Ridge National Laboratory )

报告内容简介
After nearly 10 years of design and construction activities, VULCAN, a highly anticipated engineering diffractometer at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge National Laboratory, received first neutrons. From the outset, VULCAN was designed to tackle a broad range of problems in materials science and engineering, from residual stress mapping in engineering systems to fundamental study of deformation mechanisms to in-situ study of phase transformation at multiple length scales. Although still in early in the user program, VULCAN has already shown great promises. The instrument performance as well as select science examples will behighlighted, including in-situ studies of high-temperature deformation behaviors, high-temperature phase transformationwith sub-seconds time resolution, and structure evolution in real batteries during charge-discharge cycles. In many aspects, our experience of VULCAN provides valuable lessons for instrument building at new facilities.
报告人简介
Dr. Xun-Li Wang received his Ph.D. from Iowa State University and B.S. from Peking University, both in Physics and now is a currently a Distinguished Research Staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. As a senior scientist in the Neutron Science Directorate, he leads innovative research, using neutron scattering as a primary tool, to understand deformation and phase transformation behavior in complex materials. Prior to assuming the current position, Dr. Wang was Group Leader of the Powder Diffraction Group in the formerly Neutron Scattering Science Division, which is responsible for eight instruments at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), two world-leading facilities in neutron science. Dr. Wang’s research interests included superconductors, metallic glasses, nanostructured materials, and recently magnetic shape memory alloys. He has authored more than 150 referred publications in journals, books, and conference proceedings, and published broadly in high-impact journals including Science, Nature Materials, Advanced Materials, Physical Review Letters, and Progress in Materials Science. He is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society.
